Security & Independence
The U.S. operates the largest nuclear power fleet in the world, with 94 reactors supplying approximately 20% of domestic electricity needs every year.
Nuclear plants in the U.S. operate at > 90% capacity year-around, making nuclear energy the most reliable source of power in the country.
Nuclear is the best generation source to meet the 24/7 baseload power required by AI data centers.
United States joined more than 20 countries in pledging to triple nuclear generation by 2050 to meet future energy demands, a goal supported by Amazon, Google, Meta and Dow.
The U.S. has the capacity and resources to supply a majority of our domestic uranium requirements to power the nation's commercial nuclear reactors. Despite the country's rich uranium resources, domestic production has sharply declined since the 1980's, displaced by imports and leaving these resources largely untapped. It's time to start producing our uranium at home, again.
With most Americans supporting nuclear power, the U.S. is reasserting itself as a global leader in nuclear energy and ensuring reliable, American-made uranium supply is ready to meet our growing needs. Recognizing the national security risks of foreign dependence, lawmakers are committed to rebuilding a secure domestic nuclear fuel cycle to strengthen energy independence.
America's Flagship Uranium Project
The Grants In-Situ Recovery (ISR) project proposes to build and operate a secure uranium extraction and processing facility to increase critical uranium supply and displace risky imports.
Situated in Grants, New Mexico, home to the Grants Mineral Belt and the largest contiguous uranium resource in the United States
The project is led by an affiliate of General Atomics, a large, privately held US-owned company with more than 65 years of experience in the nuclear fuel cycle industry.
The project is innovative in its proposed use, for the first time, of horizontal wells for In-Situ Recovery of uranium, a method that minimizes environmental impact when compared to historic uranium mining in the region. This approach offers significant environmental and economic benefits while extracting uranium, the crucial fuel for nuclear power plants.
With the Grants ISR project, New Mexico will become a national leader in safe and environmentally responsible uranium production, while reducing domestic reliance on uranium imports.
